Day 1: Arrival in Srinagar and Drive to Sonamarg

Your journey starts from Srinagar, the capital of Jammu & Kashmir. From Srinagar, you need to drive to Sonamarg which will usually take around 3 hours. This town is situated at a height of 7,800 ft offering beautiful scenery.

Day 2: Sonamarg to Nichnai

You will start the trek at Sonamarg. From there you need to trek to Nichnai. The distance covered here is 9 km. It will take around 7 hrs to complete this trek part. Along the way, you will come across Nichnai Thatch which is surrounded by mountains. For the rest of the day, you can camp here at Nichnai Stream.

Day 3: Nichnai to Vishansar Lake via Nichnai Pass

This part of the trek is a bit challenging because of the steep way to Nichnai Pass located at the height of 13,100 ft. You need to walk along a river stream to reach the top of the Nichnai Pass. The total distance covered here is 12 km and you will take around 7 hours to complete this part of the trek.

Day 4: Exploration at Vishansar Lake

This day is simply reserved for you to relax by the side of the Vishansar Lake. Enjoy the picturesque surroundings and beautiful sunset here. One of the other reasons to rest here for the day is that you will be able to adjust to the high altitude in the coming days.

Day 5: Vishansar Lake to Gadsar Lake via Gadsar Pass

This part of the trek is one of the most difficult you’ll encounter. Trek to the Gadsar pass is a steep way and it is located at the highest point of the trek at 13,750 ft. The water in Gadsar Lake is so pure and clean that you will be able to see the reflection of clouds in the water. This is also a great place for photography lovers. The total distance of this part is 14 km and you will take approximately 8 hrs to reach Gadsar Lake.

Day 6: Gadsar Lake to Satsar Lake

Day 7: Satsar Lake to Gangabal Twin Lakes via Zaj Pass

You will pass through Zaj pass during this part of the trek. It is situated at a height of 13,100 ft. Here you will be able to visit the twin lakes of Gangabal and Nundkol located at the base of Mount Harmukh. The path to the lakes is a bit steep so be careful while trekking. The total distance of this part is 9 km and you will take approximately 7 hrs to reach the lakes.  

Day 8: Gangabal to Naranag and Drive to Srinagar

On the final day of the trek, you will reach Naranag from Gangbal Lakes. You will trek through dense forests and Instagram-worthy scenery. The total distance of this part is 12 km and you will take approximately 7 hrs to reach Naranag. Once you reach here, you can travel back to Srinagar with tonnes of sweet memories.

Below are the complete details of the items you need to pack for this trek.

Clothing

  • The temperature here during the night time is a little bit extreme. For that, you will need thermal wear.
  • Bring a few lightweight T-shirts so that you will be comfortable during the treks.
  • In order to be warm during the cooler temperatures, you will need a Fleece jacket.
  • During the high altitudes, a down jacket is a must.
  • Waterproof jacket and pants in case of sudden rainfall.
  • For comfortable long treks, you will need trekking pants.
